Hello and welcome to the SECIA BLOG!

My name is Paige Hanson and I am the newest addition to the outstanding staff at Southeast Como Improvement Association (SECIA). I am a senior at the University of Minnesota studying Global Studies and Political Science and I also have a minor in nonprofit management. The Restorative Justice Community Action (RJCA) program here at SECIA was created to work with the increased number of volunteers who go through the Restorative justice process. Our goal is to engage and expand community service projects around our neighborhood with students from RJCA and incorporate that service into improving the lives and needs of the residence of Como, just like you! My role in this process is to support and continue the high quality of service, community action and innovation that is an integral part of the Como neighborhood and find new and exciting ways to improve and expand our programs. If you have any questions, concerns or ideas about how to make our community better, or how to involve more volunteers from the RJCA program please contact me or the full time staff at the SECIA office.

What is Restorative Justice?

Restorative justice is a valued-based approach to responding to wrongdoing and conflict, with a balanced focus on the person harmed, the person causing the harm, and the affected community. Restorative justice focuses on transforming wrongdoing by healing the harm, particularly to relationships, that is created by harmful behavior. The primary stakeholders in restorative justice processes are the person(s) who caused the harm (offender), the person(s) harmed (victim), and the affected community. By collectively identifying and addressing harms, needs, and obligations resulting from wrongdoing, we are able to create healing and put things right again.

The Restorative Justice process in Ward 2 has gone through a few changes since its beginning. Now, Restorative Justice utilizes community members and faculty from the University of Minnesota to participate in large and small group meetings which are designed to restore community relations and create a welcoming environment to talk about wrongdoings. The idea is that the violator(s) and the community member(s) ultimately gain from these meetings. SECIA comes into the equation as a liaison for completion of community service hours.

Here at SECIA we believe that wrongdoings and conflict in the community can be prevented by awareness and involvement in our local communities. If you have been a part of the Restorative Justice program as a violator, you may want to ask yourself how it could have been avoided. With that, SECIA urges our community to get to know their neighbors. Many of the violations that occur could be avoided by communication - if something is upsetting your neighbors, let their first call be to you and not the police.

Call the Restorative Justice Office at: (612) 746-0780*

Make sure to have your ticket with you, as they will ask you what type of violation it was, the citation number, the date of the offense and the offense location.
